What We Did & How We Did It

OpenShutters created the original plantation shutter over 20 years ago. Since then, they have been first choice for thousands of architects and designers, in Australia and internationally. Located on the NSW Central Coast, OpenShutters provide innovative designs to a large scale of distributors nationally. They continue to invest in design and technology, whilst maintaining their master craftsmanship standards.

The Challenge

OpenShutters’ existing web-based application was their product showroom, with a host of other functions:

  1. Ability to issue quotes and estimates
  2. Transform existing quotes into orders, trackable throughout the production process
  3. Provide a distributor portal allowing clients to raise quotes, place orders and track the production process and shipping times.
  4. Specialist retailers can login, check on the progress of their orders, quote jobs and place orders online with minimal time wasted and reinteractive’s ‘care services’, solved a major problem.

They had an existing Ruby on Rails web application hosted internally on a Windows server, but this had not been upgraded for over six years.

Along with the system being on an unsupported, outdated platform, there were further technical issues including incompatibility with updated internet browsers, open security holes and problems associated with any attempted future upgrades and advanced feature additions.

The Solution

OpenShutter’s web application is an indispensable part of their business model so ongoing system support and code-quality care is exceptionally vital. Reinteractive offers two great comprehensive services which keep any applications totally up-to-date, secure, with all hosting issues taken care of fully. A prompt decision was made to:

  1. Upgrade to the latest version of Ruby and Rails
  2. Migrate their application to OpsCare®, reinteractive’s 24/7 managed hosting service, built on the power of the AWS Cloud.
  3. Sign up to CodeCare®, reinteractive’s month-to-month ongoing code improvement service. It ensures their codebase is up-to-date and maintains a high standard of quality.

Although the upgrade was a huge undertaking, it enabled the vital security issues to be handled along with resolving outdated components.

The OpsCare service takes all the stress out of running an application, with follow-the-sun support. If something happens overnight Australian-time, our Ops team based overseas can fix it before the workday starts. Previously a storm or bad weather would cause system outages and bugs on their web application that completely halted production and sales, preventing clients from processing orders online.
