In May 2013 reinteractive completed an Inspect Service on the One Big Switch code base which included a full Code Review.
One Big Switch had requested for our team to specifically review the performance and security of their application.
Like many busy development teams with a deadline, One Big Switch had been focusing on meeting their application launch dates, building out the key features of their application and updating the features to meet their clients needs. The urgency of this development process meant that they did not have time to do a full code review of their application and required a second pair of eyes to look over their code. As with all our Inspect clients, we made sure the One Big Switch report passed through not one, but a number of developers hands to make sure that their application got the attention it deserved.
The resulting document was delivered to Ronnie Kessler at One Big Switch which he was then able to implement with the help of reinteractive and his busy development team.
Knowing the exact details of the performance and security of his Rails application allowed Ronnie to make the correct calls on what further work was needed and how best to allocate funds on taking his site forward. Once recommendations from the Inspect Service had been implemented, Ronnie had the following to say:
"Like many start-ups we tend to spend a majority of our development time implementing features and fixing bugs in order to validate assumptions and quickly iterate. However, we realised that both application security and performance needed to be included as top priorities to ensure that our data is secure and that users don't have their patience tested by sub-optimal response times.
As such we engaged reinteractive to perform their INSPECT service. Within two weeks they had completed a comprehensive review of our application, helped in eradicating major security vulnerabilities and fine-tuned the application to increase server and client-side performance."
The reinteractive Inspect is used by clients for many reasons. Sometimes it is to check on the development practices of their current development team. Other times they use the code review to find areas of weakness for the internal staff and to help highlight areas where their own developers need further training. Yet others use it as a compliance point for due diligence and auditing purposes.
Whatever the reason, the code review that we do as part of the reinteractive Inspect service will find out the nitty gritty details of your application and highlight areas of need.
