Hard Line Wealth used the App Workshop to determine the scope for their application

A reinteractive App Workshop helped define and validate Hard Line Wealth’s application plans to disrupt the financial services sector.

In looking at the list of reinteractive’s clients it is a ‘been there done that kind of thing’ so we can trust the capability overall of their products. reinteractive have the main strengths we value— character and capability. We will be obviously be working with reinteractive into the future as well.

What We Did & How We Did It

Hard Line Wealth is a multi-award-winning Financial Planning Advisory company with offices in Melbourne and the Gold Coast. They offer a full range of investment services: providing advice, sound investments, and wealth creation strategies to help their clients achieve their goals.

They have a strong mantra to provide ethical, value-driven financial planning and came to reinteractive with an idea for a disruptive customer-focused solution, addressing the key issues required from customers: trust and great service.

They used the AppWorkshop to determine the scope and requirements for their application project, thereby addressing the discovery component that is vital to the success of any software project. The final Software Requirements Specification document provided at the end of the App Workshop could then be shared with all stakeholders to obtain funding approvals.

After the initial consultation, Hard Line Wealth signed up for the reinteractive AppWorkshop with expert technology consultant, Kerry Esson, who conducts the AppWorkshop. Kerry is an MBA-qualified technologist and experienced director who brings a unique perspective to business and technology problems, sharing a wealth of experience ranging from building technology startups through to consulting to Fortune 500 companies.

I know what lean entrepreneurship is, and as a result, we saw the value in doing an AppWorkshop as the initial step because I come from a place understanding that you have to do a lot of pre-work before you go and build things.

We knew we had to validate our business concept before we invested time and money building it. It’s almost like building a lean version of a product that you are going to use before you build the MVP. It is lean entrepreneurship before the lean entrepreneurship if that makes sense. It is just common sense that you let the market decide what they like and don’t like before you go and develop something. I would tell another company building an application to read “The Lean Startup” by Eric Reis and if you still disagree, then just go fail.

App Workshop Process

The AppWorkshop is the industry-leading product validation and product discovery service. It comprises an 8-step process, delivered by an expert consultant who works closely with stakeholders. It is designed to validate your business model, develop your product idea and prioritise your product backlog.

It takes approximately 2-5 days to complete and includes the following steps:

  • Initial Review & Deep Dive
We review your understanding of your business model, idea and any possible competition.
  • Lean Business Model
We guide you on developing your Lean Business Model Canvas to provide a clear understanding of your business.
  • Product Ideation
Understand your product model and begin expanding your idea and defining your target customer.
  • Idea Validation
Go deeper into your idea by validating the key assumptions with potential customers.
  • Agile Discovery
This is where the Agile development process begins by writing the story cards that will form your product.
  • Agile Prioritisation
Prioritising the backlog is important to be able to define your MVP and future product roadmap.
From doing the AppWorkshop we got a really good understanding of what iterations need to be built for our application, and in what order. We defined who we are targeting with our application and the profile of the customer. Our consultant during the workshop, Kerry Esson, was great. He is very experienced and professional. Kerry has really helped us clarify these points.

Who is an AppWorkshop For?

The Application Workshop is highly valuable if you are in any of the following situations:

  1. You have an idea for an app but don’t know where to begin
  2. You have an idea for an app but haven’t defined the business model
  3. You have both an idea and a business model but have yet to validate them
  4. You want to map out a way to get to market quickly with the least amount of risk
  5. You want to expand or pivot an existing app to realise its fullest potential

At the end of the Application Workshop you will receive key documents that include:

  1. Lean Business Model Canvas
  2. Detailed Product Roadmap
  3. Highly detailed Technical Specification document that translates your idea into a document that developers use to build the MVP for your application

Developing any software is a significant investment. If the foundations aren’t there before development begins, the investment required to achieve a Minimum Viable Product to market can blow out.

Spending a little time up front validating the idea and business model can save $100,000s in the long run.

The App Workshop was a great investment. I really value the work that Kerry put in. We knew we could trust him with our ideas, and he is coming from a good place of what will work best for us. It was good to go through the process of the workshop and speak with him about the elements we have to go through the build our app. The AppWorkshop was definitely money well spent and it really clarified our understanding.

CDC Victoria engaged in a reinteractive App Discovery Workshop.

You have a great idea you want to build into an application. So, what is the next step to get exactly what you want, within budget?

A discovery workshop was a fairly low-risk, value for money, intermediate step that took the project forward. It should be part of any feasibility analysis prior to actually committing to building an app.
